Bodhicharya Teaching Ch 6 V 92-93

Continuing the practice of Patience, in the following verses 92 and 93 we are examining the effects and consequences of giving in to anger and hatred.  We naturally want to defend ourselves and loved ones and those we consider kin, and to punish or retaliate in some other way when we feel threatened by attacks from others, or when it seems our enemy is being given credence or unjustly praised for what we see as negative behaviour.

In session 6, Rinpoche talks about placing the focus for our Patience onto situations where we or our loved ones are experiencing negativity from others––even while we are attempting to do something that could be seen as praiseworthy.

Rinpoche has now completed his synopsis of the first volumes of the text and in Session 6 returns to the actual verses, beginning with verse 87, which examines the pitfalls of rejoicing when unhappiness befalls ones’ enemies or when someone gives help or is of benefit to those people we consider our enemy.

Here Rinpoche discusses the 72 objects of our patience and asks that we extend our awareness to the immediate causes and conditions behind situations that test our patience, to try to understand the suffering of a person when we feel tested and to try to see what is causing them to behave in a particular way.

In this session this session  Rinpoche advises that when we see injustice and express our anger, it is because often our expression of compassion is frustrated by not knowing how to respond correctly, so he says we need to recognise when that is true for us. It is very important to deeply understand how the partisan attitude created through misguided anger is dangerous. To understand the wider circumstances that have caused hatred and seeing everyone’s point of view helps in the arising of compassion within ourselves. This broader perspective, he says, sows the seeds of patience.

News Update:

Ringu Tulku will be holding a live webinar Question and Answer session via zoom on Sunday 19th April at 1.30 pm BST.

He welcomes questions online, or they can be submitted beforehand, please go to the Bodhicharya.org page for details, or see latest post from Bodhicharya Ireland.

The purpose of the text, Bodhicharyavatara is to provide a pathway to liberation from suffering through inner transformation. When we practise these instructions, it can bring a freedom that is informed by wisdom. In turn we see how generating awareness of our actions and responses to lived experience will help us develop a compassionate attitude towards others and help them to arrive at this understanding. In this session Rinpoche summarises the first 5 chapters, developing Bodhichitta, Generosity and Vigilant Introspection.

In this video Rinpoche discusses the awakening of fearlessness and resulting stability that arises when we act out of love with a common purpose, for the greater good of all and with no expectation.
When we awaken compassionate fearless attitude it is empowering: it has always been there and it is imperative now that the future is so uncertain.
